The Rival (好敵手（ライバル）Raibaru) is the twenty-first episode of the MF Ghost anime adaptation, alongside it being the 9th episode of the anime's Second Season.

Synopsis[]

Kanata is visited unexpectedly by a young man, Sena Moroboshi. He is none other than the prized student of the Dream Project's Keisuke Takahashi. Sena, who will be racing in MFG starting from the next race, drives a Toyota GR Supra and declares himself a rival to Kanata before leaving. Kanata, who felt the need to further update the 86, entrusts Okuyama with turbocharging the power unit. Meanwhile, at a stand in Gunma, some familiar men are talking about Sena's participation in the race.

Plot[]

Sena Moroboshi arrives to Ogata Cars in his Supra and meets Kanata. After telling that he is joining MFG in the next race and praising Kanata as a rookie making it to Godly 15 on his first qualifying, he mentions that their teachers used to be on the same team, which surprises Kanata. Sena can't wait to battle it out with Katagiri, which pisses off Ogata, who thinks he has no clue how hard it is to make it into the race. Kanata disagrees, saying that Sena might be a strong rival, and they are back to discussing their competition car. Ogata tries to convince Kanata to switch to a GR Supra, but gets a no with Okuyama on Kanata's side as well. Later, Ogata is Okuyama a lift, and he is surprised by Kanata's connection to his 86. Okuyama tells him about Takumi Fujiwara's underpowered AE86, in which he crowned the street racing scene and compares him to Kanata.

In Kamakura, Ren and Kanata are on another shrine expedition. Ren talks about how she met Ogata through her father, who used to fix his old import car at Ogata Cars and took Ren with him. Mr.Saionji and Ogata became good friends, but now the shop is facing hard times. Kanata recalls his grandfather's Jaguar, which once broke down during Christmas shopping trip with his mother. Same thing happened to Ren, with their family car breaking down on a highway. According to Kanata, it's hard for women to understand why men like old cars so much. He also calls Ogata a good mechanic and a nice guy, which makes Ren jealous. As their trip continues through a long set of stairs, Ren notices Kanata's great physical condition. She thinks about having a slight feeling of anxiety on their dates, but still enjoys them better than anything else. Back at home, she looks through photo of Kanata's parents as well as her own photo with him.

At Spiral Zero, the upgrade on the 86 is on the way. Ogata is talking about Kanata's unbelievable performance in MFG and asks Okuyama about which qualifying position is their goal for the next race, which turns out to be 5th, a tough spot in this competition. Back at the Saionji residence, Mayuko and Ren talk about Kanata's intentions to find his father. Ren's parents made several attempts to find information on Ken, but still have no good clues, even after Mr. Saionji went to Gunma to talk to their mutual friends. Meanwhile, Kanata meets Wakana and her friends at his work.

In Shibukawa, Gunma, Kenji is back at the gas station where Iketani and Itsuki still work at. They talk about Sena Moroboshi, Shibukawa's most promising prospect beating all records on Akagi, Myogi and Akina, entering MFG, which makes them all excited. Their conversation slowly shifts to struggles of married life, which is hard for Itsuki and Kenji, but not Iketani, who remained single throughout the years. Back at Saionji residence, Mr. Saionji worries about Ren forgetting about their family dinner, which is today. She's studying for her finals with Wakana and they talk about posting the picture of Kanata's parents to the Internet to get some help online. Ren doesn't want to do that, since she thinks this photo is too personal for him.

Later, the Saionji's meet Kanata for dinner at an Italian restaurant, concerned about him spending a lot of money on them. After getting reassured that it's his wish, they proceed to have a good time, with Mayuko getting drunk and calling Kanata his secret son and Kanata praising this Italian restaurant to the ones in England. After the dinner, Saionji's thank Kanata for the treat, saying that he can stay with them and ask for any help since he's still not considered an adult at 19 years old. Later, we see the upgraded 86 and Kanata testing it on the Turnpike with Ogata.

Differences from the Manga[]

  • The shot that showcases the various MFG cars on the flyer at the Gas Station is an anime-only addition

Trivia[]

  • The synopsis for this episode on the MF Ghost website was delayed for almost a full day.
  • A small error can be found at the zoom-out at the 4:52 mark, as Kanata's 86 is seen with the Carbon Fibre hood installed, despite the 86 not being modified at that point.
  • This is the first episode since Turn10 (and also the only episode of Season 2) that lacks any Eurobeat songs.
    • Coincidentally, both episodes cover chapters in-between races.
  • During Kanata's flashback, the grocery shop, Sainsbury's, is misspelt as "SansburY", likely to avoid licensing issues with the company.
  • During the scene where Ogata and Okuyama was having a discussion at Spiral Zero, Okuyama incorrectly says that Kanata ranked 9th at Ashinoko GT during the qualifiers, when he actually ranked 10th.
