A Cruel Reality (残酷な現実 Zankokuna genjitsu) is the seventeenth episode of the MF Ghost anime adaptation, alongside it being the 5th episode of the anime's Second Season.
Synopsis[]
The pouring rain caused the Godly Fifteen cars to spin out one after another. Even in the worst conditions, Kanata continued to drive without any mistakes and joined the third place group. He steadily improved his position. Up ahead, Akaba's Ferrari and Ishigami's Porsche were in a fierce battle, and Ishigami, the previous year's champion, dropped out. Meanwhile, Kanata was catching up with Maezono's NSX, but there was an overwhelming difference in power between it and the 86. A cruel reality was about to stand in Kanata's way.
Plot[]
While the Angels are busy changing up the leaderboard after Daigo's crash, Nozomi is planning an attack on Yanagida, who is stuck behind Ohtani. She successfully executes the "sandwich formation" without her brother and moves up to 11th place. Upon hearing about Nozomi's moves, Kakeru loses traction and spins, but he is able to save it make a full spin using the clutch pedal. Marie, who is tasked to change the leaderboard, is amazed that her and Nozomi are the same age. She gets a question about a place she would like to visit, to which she replies that it doesn't matter as long as she is with someone she loves.
As the race goes on, Sawatari is leading the race and enjoying the absence of a car in front. Meanwhile, the third place group is down to 5 cars and it's pace is hindered by Ishigami. He thinks that his GT3 is the perfect car for MFG regulations, whose creator, Ryo Takahashi, overlooked rear-engined cars. Despite that, Akaba is breathing down his spine and he doubts that Ishigami's Porsche is suitable for MFG regulations and real competition. He increases the pressure on Fujin and bumps his car, making Ishigami go faster.
After the group enters the section in the woods, Ishigami loses grip with his front tires. Unable to regain traction, his car starts to spin, hitting the concrete wall in the process. Akaba manages to pass him without contact and Fujin is left waiting until other cars pass to make a safe reentry, making him fall from 3rd to 12th place. As Ikeda talks about the damage to his car, Number 7 and Kyoko are asked to change the leaderboard. Ren is surprised by Kanata's steady climb up the ranks and gets the same question as Marie. Her response is about her grandma's house in Niigata, which she hasn't visited since grade school. All the good memories of the place make her want to visit it again during the summer break. Kyoko also gets the same question, she wants to relax on a tropical island far from the beaches of Shonan.
Back to the race, Akaba's mechanic asks him not to push it too hard since the gap to the leaders is too big. He disagrees, saying that it's his only chance to catch up. Maezono, who is followed by Kanata, remembers how he was traumatizingly beaten during Round 1 and is ready to take up on Katagiri. As the two go through the forest section, Ikeda notes how Kanata seems to have memorized the entire track layout, praising his talent and hard work. Meanwhile, Kouki is struggling to get Michael off his back. Despite his best efforts, Beckenbauer neither falls back or tries to overtake, which Ikeda explains as a fierce psychological battle.
At the Angels booth, Ren and Kyoko are talking about the presence of a tent during the rain. According to Kyoko, from now on, the tent is always gonna be there, but she advices Ren to use a sunblock while she is at work, since tan lines can reveal Ren's secret about working as an Angel. Meanwhile, Kanata tries an attack on Maezono in a corner, but lacks power to complete the overtake on the straightaway following the turn. This frustrates Ogata, and Ikeda explains that Kanata's current position might become his peak. Losing in Ashiniko GT's third sector means losing in the entire race. Ikeda really wants to see Kanata is a more powerful car, a thought supported by Ogata, who already has plans on how to spend his cut of Kanata's prize money.
