Saionji family.

As Kanata's qualification run at Lake Ashinoko GT starts, Ren and her father are at home watching him live. Mayuko refuses to watch Kanata race, while Ren accuses dad of being too polite to Kanata. For him, talking so casually to a racer like Kanata is uncomfortable.

S2 E13 (27)

Kanata drifting through the death zone.

At the booth, Shun is talking about Ashinoko GT's death zone, known as the "Descend of the White Reaper" or "Slip Trap". After the erruption of Mt. Fuji, volcanic ash flies over the area of the track, making the road slippery. Ogata warns Kanata about this and upon entering the death zone, he starts drifting through the corners to the shock of everyone watching. Shun asks if there's something wrong with the 86's traction control and is shocked to learn from that Kanata has asked him to turn it off. Going through the death area, Kanata regains the Focus Flag, which is a first in MFG history.

S2 E13 (32)

Fumihiro watching the broadcast.

Fumihiro is watching the broadcast from his office and recognizes Kanata's technique as Takumi's zero-counter steer drift. By swinging out his rear to avoid understeer and controlling the oversteer, Kanata is able to compose any line he wants. At the booth, Shun doubts the effectiveness of his technique and gets proven wrong as Kanata rises to 10th place. After exiting the death zone, a downhill section starts and he's up to 9th place.

S2 E13 (74)

Okuyama watching Kanata's run.

At the Saionji residence, Ren hears Yoji Tanaka talking about the 86's 2-litre NA engine. She asks her dad about it, and after a brief explanation, she is puzzled by Kanata's ability to drive so fast in such an underpowered car, comparing him to a wizard like Harry Potter. Meanwhile, Okuyama is also watching the feed at the Spiral Zero office. He mentions how every track in MFG requires specific suspension tuning, calling his latest work an "Ashinoko Custom". He is happy to be able to shake up the world of MFG, the child of Gunma street racing scene, being an ex-racer from Kanagawa himself.

S2 E13 (105)

Kanata behind the wheel.

Back at the booth, Shun compares Kanata's driving to other racers in MFG, noting big differences in lines and tire usage. At that time, he rises to 7th place through the downhill section towards the lakeside. Tanaka mentions that the Kanata had his Focus Flag for longer, than the current track record holder, Kouki Sawatari, which confuses Ren. Her father explains that this system only judges pilots' driving technique, which she thinks is unfair. Meanwhile, Kanata passes the Relay straight and heads to the final 2km uphill section, where his car's low power gives him a major handicap. He loses a position and crosses the finish line in 8th place in the provisional leaderboard.

S2 E13 (132)

Takumi's extra lessons with Kanata.

At the paddock, the three meet up. Shun asks Kanata about his drifting technique, which he explains was taught to him by his teacher at RDRS outside of regular classes. Together they would go out on rally courses on cars with soft suspension, where his teacher would race him around or give him advice in the passenger seat. Kanata mentions how close he felt to his mentor, likely due to not knowing his father and being half-Japanese as well.

S2 E13 (156)

Tendon.

Next up is Ishigami Fujin's qualifying run, where he mentions losing some skills with age while gaining other ones. While that happens, Shun treats his company to a celebratory lunch, where Kanata tries tendon. He is once again amazed by variety and taste of Japanese seafood, comparing it UK, which lacks that variety despite also being an island country. Shun tells Kanata to try shirasu don, an Enoshima specialty. Back at home the next day, Ren and Kanata decide to meet up at Kamakura after his shift at the café ends to continue their search efforts and try shirasu don together.

S2 E13 (232)

Michael overtaking Sawatari's ghost.

Meanwhle, it's the final day of qualifiers for the 2nd race and it's time for Beckenbauer's run. He is not making any mistakes and keeps a perfect pace, which is exactly 0,2 behind Sawatari. His plan is to let Kouki be the pacemaker and relax until the final stretch of his run, where he can kick it into a higher gear. Random viewers of the live feed comment on how the battle for the pole position is between a Cayman and an Alpine, which marks the nearing end of the "Rich Man's Regulation" era in MFG. Sawatari is also watching the broadcast, commenting on how he's not afraid of Michael and being more concerned about Kanata's driving without any limits. He meets up with Sana afterwards and they have a date. At the last uphill section of Ashinoko GT, Michael finally speeds up and leaves Sawatari behind, finishing first. This puts Kanata on the 10th place on the grid for the final race.
