Kanata is looking for an opportunity from the rear of the pack against the 600 horsepower class monster machines. As they approach the downhill section, the true value of Kanata and his Toyota 86 is demonstrated once again. Kanata overtakes the Honda Civic of Kazuhiro Maezono that the Yajikita Siblings passed, and moves up to 14th place. In front of them, Akaba in his Ferrari 488 GTB and Daigo Oishi in a Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 were in a duel. Furthermore, Michael Beckenbauer in his Porsche 718 Cayman S, caught up with Fujin Ishigami in his Porsche 991 GT3, the champion of the previous year.

Plot[]

The race had begun not long ago and all 15 cars are speeding in Sector 1 of the course, as commentated by Yoji Tanaka. Ohtani notes Aiba's competitive enthusiasm as he was overtaken by the latter not long after the race began. Meanwhile Daigo struggles to keep up with his opponents ahead as he cannot stop loosing grip whenever he tries to accelerate. He curses the grip to weight ratio rule of MFG which kept him from getting bigger tyres. At the commentary station, Tanaka along with Kai Kogashiwa discusses about the power to weight ratio regulation, where the latter states how the rule is usually more favorable towards high powered European super cars, hence leading to the term "rich man's regulation". However with the entry of Michael Beckenbauer and Kanata Katagiri, the favor seemed to have shifted from pure power to balanced setups. Kai then tells if Ryo Takahashi intentionally kept such regulations for such specifications, which he finds it a brilliant strategy. At the MFG HQ, Fumihiro who was hearing Kogashiwa's commentary tells he's right on track with his speculations on Ryosuke's strategy, as MFG itself was an evolution of Ryosuke's previous street racing team, 'Project D'. However he doubts anyone can come through this complex setups.

Nozomi overtakes Maezono

Nozomi overtakes Maezono with Kakeru's help

As the racers now pass through the Observatory, now passing from Sector 1 to Sector 2, Tanaka commentates how now the hill climb will turn into a steep descent from here on. Kanata, who is slowly catching up from the last position asks Ogata how far away he is from the nearest car. Ogata tells him he is 6.8 seconds away from catching up to an Alfa Romeo, to which Kanata responds that he will be catching up with it. Ogata is skeptical to think he will clear a huge chunk of time. In front of him, the Kakeru watches his sister Nozomi struggle to overtake the Civic in front of her. As per her request he decides to with 'Formation #3'. Kakeru slows down his Lotus Exige in the inside of a high speed corner, making Maezono in his Civic Type-R think he can overtake him from the outside. However just before he could  nudge in, Kakeru suddenly switches lanes to outside, making Maezono suddenly brake, giving Nozomi behind him the opportunity to pass him from the inside.

Kanata overtakes Maezono

Realizing he's been baited, Maezono gets angry at his race manager in his microphone warning him about a car about to overtake him. However it was then Maezono realized that he was warning about another car behind him about to overtake him, but it was too late as Kanata in his 86GT takes on Maezono by surprise and passes him around another highspeed corner. While Maezono is angry at his manager for not warning him earlier, even he realizes that he thought the 86GT was far behind him before the downhill section. Kakeru and Nozomi notices the 86GT catching up with them, to which the latter decides to keep up the pace for now as they cannot beat him in this section. Nozomi finds this quite amusing, much contrary to her brother stressing the situation.

Ren and Kyoko Turn05

Ren and Kyoko having a discussion about fanservice in MFG

Back at the MFG Angels grouping point where the scoreboards were arranged, Ren Saionji asks Kyoko Kurihara, a senior MFG Angel why the Scoreboards had to be manually adjusted by an Angel when MFG is a rich and advanced organization, to which Kyoko points out to the MFG cameraman who was pointing the camera towards that Angel's butt as she changed the scoreboard, much to the latter's delight surprisingly. Ren was shocked to see this, but Kyoko explains the role of fanservice in MFG as Angels. The Cameraman then asks Moe Hamazaki, that Angel a question on who is her favorite racer, to which she responds by stating she doesn't have any particular favorite among the 15 and wants all of them to reach the finish line safely. In midst of all this Ren realizes the task of being an Angel isn't easy.

Maezono struggles to keep up

Maezono struggles to keep up with Kanata

Meanwhile as the racers race towards Sector 3, Fujin Ishigami in the first place feels the pressure by Beckenbauer tailing close to him. Beckenbauer mocks Ishigami for not utilizing the prowess of the 991 GT3 and rudely comments on how Asians like him doesn't deserve to drive such a great German car. Some distance behind them, Shun in his GT-R closely follows Yudai Sakamoto in his R8, concerning the latter about the former's tyre usage. In the midst of this, Kaito Akaba in his 488 GTB had passed Shintaro Natsume's BMW M3 and is now tailing Daigo's Lamborghini Huracan. While Akabane finds no preference towards his Ferrari, he feels irked when he sees the Lamborghini badge, making him feel the desire to surpass it. As Tanaka comments on the position of each car as they all pass Sector 3, he specially notes Kanata and his 86GT in the 14th position, with Maezono following him closely in his Civic Type R, hoping to get his chance to regain his position before the straight, however despite his attempts to, Kanata seemingly widens their gap in every high speed corners, making the former absolutely dumbstruck.

Takumi Fujiwara and Kanata Turn05

Kanata seen with Takumi Fujiwara in a flashback

Suddenly it was noted that Nastume's BMW M3 had broken down and halted towards a side. Kakeru briefly relaxed for a moment upon realizing the free bonus position, only for Nozomi to notify him about Kanata rapidly approaching them from behind. When suggested a blocking formation by Nozomi, Kakeru rejects it and tells her to keep up the pace as they don't want to lose it at this section. As the cars now enter the foggy section of the Ghost town area, Tanaka and Kai notes they can't comprehend this area properly due to the fog blurring the vision of the drones. Tanaka takes this time to reveal more information about Kanata Katagiri to the fans. According to him, his surname Katagiri came from his father. Kanata was born and brought up in Cambridge, UK. He was trained at the Royal Donington Racing School. He began karting at four years and participated at British Kart Championship at seven and won six championships in the next two years. He also won the F4 Championship in the next two years. Kai Kogashiwa was shocked to listen to Kanata's experience records, so was Ogata, who realized Aiba Shun was not bluffing about Kanata back in his qualification round. Tanaka continues on, saying that Kanata scored the highest score in his school, and got multiple placement opportunities from racing companies even before graduation, but turned them down and he returned home instead. Mr and Mrs. Saionji watching this realizes it was around that time when Kanata's mother's conditions deteriorated. Tanaka also had one more fact for Kanata, that in his academy there was a Japanese lecturer, who went with the name of Takumi Fujiwara.

Errors & Trivia[]

  • An error can be found in this episode when Daigo checks his rear view mirror, as the front plates on Shintaro Natsume's BMW M3 and Kaito Akaba's Ferrari 488 GTB aren't mirrored.
  • Other one is when Kanata overtakes Maezono (at 09:21), the front wheels of the 86 are not spinning. Furthermore, the wheel clips on the fender for a few frames.
  • When Kaito mentions the logo of Daigo's Lamborghini, the actual car doesn't have the logo in the rear.

Quotes[]

Yosuke Ohtani: (Observing Aiba) Going on the attack already, Aiba? But if you get too keyed up, one bad call can sink your whole race. That's how it is in MFG. And after three years of doing this, I finally feel like I can be competitive. Experience is everything in MFG.

Fumihiro Joyu: (After listening to Kogashiwa's commentary on MFG's regulation) Looks like Kogashiwa learned something in all these years of racing. He's on the right track. MFG is the next phase in the evolution of Project D. What Ryosuke called his "study of high-speed racing on public roads." But I have doubts that anyone can solve this complex formula Ryosuke had come up with.

Kyoko Kurihara: (Explaining to Ren) Fanservice is an important part of the gig. The Angel Cam is popular and gets a ton of views. Better brace yourself for it, Ren-chan.

Michael Beckenbauer: Do you deserve to be driving that car, Ishigami? The 991 GT3 is the ultimate in Porsche rear-engine models. Do you even know how to drive it properly? Does a street monkey from the far reaches of Asia even have the right to sit in the seat of a German masterpiece? Prove it to me.

Kaito Akaba: (tailing Daigo's Huracan) I don't feel particularly attached to the Ferrari brand. But it's a superior weapon in fights like these, so I make use of it. So why is it I find that bull emblem so annoying?

Yoji Tanaka: (Continuing his commentary about Kanata) But here comes the real surprise I uncovered while doing this research. There happens to be a Japanese instructor on the staff at this academy in Donington. And his name is... Takumi Fujiwara.
