MF Ghost (MFゴースト "MF Gōsuto") is an anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Shuichi Shigeno . Directed by Tomohito Naka and animated by Felix Film, it premiered on October 2, 2023. A second season was confirmed in Turn12 of the anime, and premiered on October 6, 2024.

Plot[]

In the future from "Initial D", the year is 202X A.D. in Japan, where self-driving cars have become widespread. In such an era, an automobile race on public roads is being held. The race, popular all over the world, is called MFG, and the fastest cars such as Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini are competing one after another. Meanwhile, Kanata Rivington, a driver who graduated from a racing school in England, is participating in the race to fulfill a certain purpose.[1]

Production[]

An anime adaptation of MF Ghost was announced on January 3, 2022, with a promotional video released along with the launch of a dedicated website and Twitter account.[2][3] However, leaks of such an adaptation were seen as far back as December of the year prior.[4] The first promotional video for the anime contained primarily shots of the vehicles to be used in the anime racing and a few glimpses of the scenery.

On May 5, 2022, the second promotional video for the anime was released. The PV revealed the production staff as well as the animation studio adapting the material, as well as improved CGI models for the cars and a teaser of Kanata at the end. The song "Manifold Love" by Hotblade was used as the song in the PV, confirming the use of Eurobeat within the anime. Kanata and Ren's character designs were also revealed on the anime's website.[5][6]

From November 11th to December 31st, 2022, multiple images of the CGI models of multiple cars were released on the MFG Twitter account. These included Kanata’s 86, Shun’s R35, Michael’s 718, Daigo’s Huracan, Kouki’s A110, Kakeru’s Exige, Nozomi’s 4C, a drone, Kaito’s 488 GTB, Yudai’s R8, Jackson’s 911, Yosuke’s GT-S, Kazuhiro’s Civic Type-R, Takuya’s M6, E. Hänninen’s LC-500, and Sena’s GR Supra.[7]

On January 3, 2023, the third promotional video for the anime was released, revealing more staff members, the main cast, and returning cast members from the Initial D series.[8] The song, "Break Out Fire" by Mega NRG Man was used as the background song in the PV.

On May 20, 2023, it was confirmed that the American anime streaming service Crunchyroll would be licensing the series on its streaming platform in all territories except Asia.[9] This confirmation established that a subtitled version of the anime would be released in English, French, Arabic, Spanish, German, Italian, and Portuguese, which were all made available on the respective YouTube channels of their respective countries' languages.[10]

On July 5, 2023, the fourth promotional video was released, revealing the anime's air date sometime in October 2023, and the opening song "JUNGLE FIRE" by Yū Serizawa featuring rapper MOTSU. The promotional video and the MF Ghost website also revealed the anime's ending theme song "Stereo Sunset" by Himika Akaneya (Prod. AmPm) as her solo debut single.[11]

A pre-screening of the first episode was shown courtesy of Crunchyroll at both Anime Expo 2023 and Fanexpo Canada 2023. A pre-screening event of the first 2 episodes of the anime was held on September 1, 2023 at TOHO CINEMAS Hibiya in Chiyoda City. Yuma Uchida (voice actor of Kanata Katagiri (Kanata Rivington)), Tomohito Naka (Director), and Masafumi Mima (Sound Director) made a stage appearance at the event as speakers.[12]

Differences between the anime and manga[]

Trivia[]

  • Kanata's 86 in the first PV is seen with headlight washers contrary to the manga, where they are missing
    • This was changed in the later PVs
  • In the trailers released by Crunchyroll, there are some errors in the subtitles. This happens in all translations.
    • At minute 1:09 Tanaka announces that only 10 drivers will pass to the final, what is incorrect, in total 15 drivers will pass, Kanata and the divine 15. This is repeated in all translations.
    • At minute 1:17 Fumihiro asks to call Ryosuke, but in each translation they wrote the name differently.
      • In English and German Ryosuke is called "Yusokue".
      • The English subtitle says "Call Yusokue's phone ASAP", using the abbreviation of the phrase "As soon as possible" instead of the phrase itself.
      • In Spanish, Portuguese and French, Ryosuke is called as "Yosuke", which generates confusion as Yosuke is another character in the series, Yosuke Othani.
    • At minute 1:23 Ogata says "If I make it back safely, I'll feel able to smile and hug you", when he should say "If he makes it back". This only happens in the Spanish trailer.
