Summary[]

Kanata passes the first checkpoint of the Ashinoko GT course, moving up into provisional 13th place. At the booth, Aiba and Ogata are shocked at Kanata's performance, as not only was the 86's engine not modified, but the course starts uphill. The 86 then receives a focus flag before passing by the melody paving, with Kanata noting that it sounds like a Japanese ghost story. Aiba then notes that after the melody path is the Ashinoko GT's Death Zone, this area of the course contains a lot of volcanic ash from Mt. Fuji on the road, making the conditions slippery, which garnered the nickname of the "Slip Trap" as no matter how hard they try to remove the ash, it still stays on the course.

As Kanata enters the Slip Trap, Ogata reminds Kanata to take it easy, with Kanata saying that his "Mu" (the friction level between his car's brake pads and rotors) is decreasing, and will adjust his driving to comprehend this, which is something that Aiba doesn't understand. The 86 begins to drift through the Slip Trap, which shocks both Aiba and Ogata. Aiba then asks if the 86's traction control is broken, which Ogata tells Aiba that Kanata told him to turn it off. Aiba then notices that Kanata is pulling of these rally-styled moves in the Death Zone because he wants to. The 86 then receives its Focus Flag in the death zone, which shocks Tanaka as that has never happened so far in MFG's history, and Takana even wonders if the MFG data analysis system is working right today. At the same time, Fumihiro notes that Kanata is shifting the car's weight to drift through the corners using minimum steering angle, which is the exact same move as Takumi Fujiwara's "zero-counter steer drift", and Fumihiro says that Project D's unbeatable downhill racer has come back to Ashinoko in-spirit.

As the 86 continues through the Slip Trap, Aiba is shocked at the Focus Flag being given to Kanata mid-way through the Death Zone, but notes that it makes sense in terms of physics as Kanata generates enough yaw to enter the corner without understeering, and is in control when the car oversteers. Aiba then says that it can't be that fast going through the Slip Trap via drifting, but Ogata notes that Kanata has moved up to 10th in the Slip Trap. Tanaka then says that this is the 2nd race in a row that Kanata has pulled ahead in a courses death zone, and says that whilst the "White Reaper" is the bane of every MFG driver's existence, it's giving Kanata so much mercy. Kanata then notes that his tire's grip is returning, signalling that he's almost out of the Death Zone.
